Not to be film-snobby but I like when older fantasy movies like this would use actual sets & costumes like that; if this movie were made today, almost everything in that frame would be CGI. Which can still work, when done well, but, there's a charm to doing it like this, makes it feel more like a lived-in world(edited)
practical effects age better than CGI, but they get away with paying animators less than other film artists :/ something to do with unions I think(edited)
(there were rumours for a while that the horse actually died IRL filming that scene, but the movie's director has said they're not true, the horse was okay)(edited)
i just had a thought... they're all named after a prt of the dragon... and my mind is like, ...imagine if this crossed over with Dragonball, then would that mean...

he's like, "Wait, I'm a parent in a Disney movie... welp, guess it's my time"
I was happy that it wasnt a "dragon bad! must kill!" like the stereotype is. The first time i watched it, i was somewhat annoyed, as i figured Sisu would discover her actual power during the story, because "i'm a really stronger swimmer" seemed... like a red herring, literary wise, then got annoyed this did not happen.
However, i've since then i've revised my thoughts and come to quite enjoy that her power really is nothing we'd think of as "special". It's just... quintessentially her.
Yup. I suffer from gender dysphoria episodes during trans-based movies more than my species dysphoria in dragon movies. Mostly because my species dysphoria can at least be held at arms length, with no valid way forward (as far as i consider it) to progress. My gender dyshporia hits harder purely due to me knowing i can do something about it, but do not have the access to do so.
I've only seen the movie once but I gotta say I really liked it overall. It did make me cry though... and Sisu... I wanna be friends with Sisu. She's so pure and sweet, but also understands the responsibilities and power she has (or at least, by the end of the movie she does)

@Dragonne if it helps... try to find contentment in the how you are... we have as we feel to be, but... tough as it is, I find we have to make the most out of what we do have right now
Oh oof, yes. Every time I've gone through that thought experiment I've realized that best case scenario still sees me getting poached by some rednecks.
I think IRL transformation would go pretty well! Don't listen to people saying rednecks would shoot you, that'd still be murder! People understand they shouldn't shoot intelligent lifeforms!
KeystoneDarkJade
let's all tell the world we're poisonous to eat, just in case we wake up ourselves
Yeah, not to mention you'd probably be able to shrug off most shots depending on how tougb your scales are and your size

I love your optimism, but I suspect some would still at least try... but hopefully it would only be one, or a few of us, who would be hurt by them before some sort of protected sanctuary would be set up for us.
I don't think there'd be a sanctuary. I think dragons would still be expected to fit into society. Don't quit your dayjob just 'cause you turned into a dragon.

i was gonna say, "why would someone eat dragons, we probably wouldn't taste very good anyway" then realized someone would probably try to make derg burgers anyway just to say they did
and then my internet-poisoned brain is like, "derg burgers... hamdergers... skinner voice 'No, I said steamed drags! That's what I call hamdergers!'"(edited)

I've not been able to achieve such. I do as well as i'm able, considering my experiences, but sometimes it's more healthly to simply accept one cannot achieve certain things, than to have hope burn a hole in one's pocket. (no, seriously, when i finally covered the basics of my life's trauma, one of my therapist genuinely questioned how i'm still sane. LOTS of zen and self introspection.)

hopefully the presence of others can help you deal with things Dragonne... I like to think we all are for moral support of each other (as all the world should be, honestly)
I once heard on radio of someone selling their⦠(gross body stuff) dead skin and dandruff and what not
so, imagine, selling your old antler, or fin pieces, or baby fang
Ditto. I'm well aware that i would not survive my transformation if my magical abilities could not immediately come with me. Well, technically i would survive the transformation, not being transformed.
But i'd die extremely happy in the moments before i lost the ability to breathe.(edited)
I'm imagining how people now make "dragon scale eggs" on Etsy and such but with scale-shaped pieces of metal. Only now they're making jewelry and all sorts of art stuff using real dragon scales
itβs not that bad really, itβs kinda just like any creature meeting each other knowing the other
you know, how other being sees us and interacts with us
My species shed scales like humans shed hair. About six to twenty a day depending on the time of year.

Oh that sounds really interesting, and a little alarming tbh. My species shed and regrew scales fairly quickly, so a shed scale was usually only missing for a couple days. It'd be kinda strange to just be in my skin lol

lol well to be fair, I have a shitton of hair and I shed a lot. Ten hairs a day is the average for my scalp. But I have way over the average number of hairs for a human.
he has a special case where when the temperature changes slightly, his body secretes a thin candlewax-like substance from underneath each of his scales that runs down tiny grooves keeping them cold and firm
but when it gets too hot, the candlewax-like substance evaporates meaning he is unable to cool down

SAME! Lots of hair, and shed like a short-hair dog. Expect i dont have short hair. I have a large amount of baby-fine hair, and shed something like 100+ strands per day. (And yes, this is homeostasis for my hair, as this is actually slightly less than my natural growth rate.)

Oh, wow that is a lot! Mine are super thick, like you can literally cut cheese with just three strands of the stuff. (soft cheese that is, not parmesan or something)
cutting cheese with dragon hair is, that sounds interesting

I'm from the Deep South, the "boot" of Louisiana, and i have the reverse issue. I deal with heat FAR better than i humanly should. This is in part due to the fact i cannot easily retain bodyheat. So this also means i'm very sensitive to the cold, and can lose enough body heat to begin hypothermia, if not careful, at "normal" temps (60-70f, 15-21c) for most people.
the lowest i've ever gone through without feeling the least bit cold is 2 degrees celsius

I'm honestly the opposite these days. If it's over 50F outside be prepared for me to shed my jacket and grumble about it being too warm. I melt if it's over 75F.
I do too, probably surprisingly for how I lived in El Paso for over half my life
Some of the most miserable days I've ever had was when our AC broke, which happened at least once a summer past a point
Dragonne
I'm not joking, the highest temp at which i've remarked about being cold at is above 90f/32c.
there was this one time, when i was sitting in class and i looked at the temperature like "WHAT? THERE'S NO WAY IT'S 32 DEGREES OUTSIDE" but it felt like 22 when we were outdoors
KeystoneDarkJade
of course, 90 here means the heat index is around 100-105
Around the same for me. Answer: that day was particularly dry, and so the heat index was around the actual temp. This came as a sudden shift from the previous day's heat index of near 120f. So to me, it was cold, a 30 degree (relative) difference.

Related note: One year in NOLA Pride, there was a horrible heat wave. It was so bad (index over 120, no clouds, very humid) that nobody on the grounds was even able to complete setting up stalls to get shade up for everybody else. Luck would have it, i have enough rudimentary heat stress training to recognize and help people out initially. So i worked with the first responders, who i actually drove down there with, to "tag-and-bag" those who are not yet aware they are about to suffer heat stroke. (this is ridiculously common in an area where it's the #1 reason for death 6 months out of the year, every year.)
I did this as i only had my skirt, a light tank top rolled up, so i had most of my body exposed for heat release. But due to the fact i was one of the very few who were functional in the heat and sun, i started going around and helping people complete their stalls, to get everybody in the shade. I probably set up half the grounds basically solo, while also running for water and letting the first responders know of cases.(edited)
Classic "Room full of people who have been studying this creature for untold years but are total idiots compared to random dude brought in for plot reasons" scene
do you think that pilot ejected because he wanted to escape or because he's just hardcore into vore and realized he'd never get a better chance than this

Ah yes, a very delicate and highly specialized piece of electronics equipment, fixed in 30 seconds with some MacGyvering and a makeshift soldering iron
I wish hydra type dragons like this were more common because the only other notable one I've really seen is Dragonlord Placidusax (who only has two heads, though he had four but the other two are gone)
There was, of all things, an episode of I Love Lucy that had a two-headed dragon in it where they just stuck two actors in a huge (and frankly really cool, for the time period and budget) dragon suit and did them up with makeup to give their faces scales and whatnot. It was of course tongue-in-cheek, but cute.

Yeah it seems like a similar quality adaptation though probably less personally insulting to me considering ATLA is one of my favorite pieces of media period
Eragon prob better if you never ever read the book, Saphira was quite lovely though rrrruurrrrrrr

I still suggest I Am Dragon to folks who've not seen that, although that seems to have to be ordered online as stores seem to not carry it (possibly due to the Russia thing)
I definitely do too, even outside of being a dragon I definitely do have a heavy draw for mountains considering a lot of my Pokemon kintypes are from the mountainous Sinnoh/Hisui region
